POKOTABI / Taifukajitsu
泰風佳日
Located near Kyoto's Nijo Castle, Taifukajitsu serves made-to-order chewy shiratama, douhua, and a curated range of Taiwanese teas in a calm space shared with resident cats.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A generous bowl arrives filled with soft soy pudding, coarse sweet red bean paste, tapioca pearls, and freshly prepared, chewy shiratama rice dumplings. Situated just west of Nijo Castle, Taifukajitsu is a quiet tearoom where visitors can linger over handmade Japanese sweets and Taiwanese desserts. For its signature douhua, guests choose between a crisp, mellow syrup made from Tanegashima cane sugar or a deeper, richer syrup brewed with Tarama island brown sugar. Clear and unpretentious in flavor, the dish is satisfyingly hearty yet light enough to finish effortlessly.
Beyond douhua, the menu offers a diverse roster of confections and teas. Choices range from an aromatic hojicha jelly and an intensely rich matcha jelly to a dense chocolate pudding crafted from soy milk and bitter chocolate. Each is served with shiratama dumplings and sweet bean paste for a balanced, filling treat. A container of kinako roasted soybean flour sits on the table, inviting guests to dust their sweets as they please to vary each bite.
The sweets pair naturally with the shop's carefully brewed Taiwanese teas. The selection makes it easy to match a cup to your mood: crisp, floral Wenshan Baozhong; gently sweet Alishan high-mountain tea; Jinxuan with its naturally milky, vanilla-like notes; or bolder, full-bodied pours like Dong Ding and Oriental Beauty.
With around 10 seats, the compact interior pairs white walls with warm wood for an unhurried, calm atmosphere. Resident cats spend their days napping and strolling leisurely around the dining room, making the cafe especially welcoming for cat enthusiasts, though visitors with allergies should plan accordingly. It is an easy stop during a walk through the neighborhood, well suited to pausing over freshly steeped tea and gentle sweets.
